Since 2015, we have specialised in supporting vulnerable families in the Gosnells area, particularly those who have gone through trauma. Our educators have specialist training in trauma-informed practice to best support the most vulnerable children. It is our privilege to serve our community in this way.

How we help vulnerable children

Early intervention is one of the most powerful supports we can give vulnerable children, particularly those who have experienced trauma. When provided early, the right strategies and relationships can protect children from long-term harm and give them a stronger foundation for life. Some key benefits include:

1. Brain development and learning

  • The early years are when the brain is most flexible. Trauma can disrupt healthy development, but timely support can help children rewire pathways, regulate emotions, and build cognitive skills.

  • Early intervention improves speech, language, and learning outcomes, reducing later difficulties in school.

2. Emotional regulation and resilience

  • Children with trauma often struggle with big emotions. Early support helps them learn safe ways to manage feelings, reducing anxiety, aggression, or withdrawal.

  • Positive, consistent relationships with educators and caregivers foster resilience and give children a sense of safety and trust.

3. Social skills and relationships

  • Intervention helps children build secure attachments and learn how to connect with peers and adults.

  • Stronger social skills reduce isolation, behavioural challenges, and conflict, making it easier for children to thrive in group settings.

4. Behaviour and self-regulation

  • Without support, trauma can lead to ongoing behavioural challenges. Early intervention provides strategies for self-control, attention, and coping with stress.

  • This reduces the likelihood of children being labelled as “difficult” or excluded from learning opportunities.

5. Long-term life outcomes

  • Children who receive support early are less likely to develop mental health issues, substance misuse problems, or be involved in the justice system later.

  • They are more likely to succeed at school, find stable employment, and form healthy relationships.

Early intervention can break the cycle of trauma by providing safety, healing, and opportunities at the stage when children are most open to growth. It doesn’t erase what has happened, but it can prevent trauma from defining a child’s future.

How we help vulnerable families

We work alongside families and caregivers to create safe, nurturing environments where children can thrive. Our support includes:

  • Providing fully-funded care at no cost to parents or carers by assisting families to access the Child Wellbeing Subsidy, which covers the full cost of care if a child is at risk of harm through abuse, neglect, or family violence, or when families face challenges such as mental health issues, stress, substance use, or instability.

  • Helping parents, grandparents, and foster carers understand the impact of trauma and develop strategies that strengthen children’s wellbeing.

  • Addressing risk factors that affect parenting capacity, supporting the whole family, not just the child.

  • Focusing on helping as many families as possible. You are not alone, and we are here to help. Since 2015, we have helped hundreds of families with fully funded child care through the Child Wellbeing subsidy.

For referring services

We work closely with referral agencies to ensure vulnerable children and their families receive the right support at the right time. Our team can:

  • Provide safe, nurturing high-quality care for children while families receive support to address risks and challenges.

  • Offer trauma-informed strategies that promote children’s emotional regulation, social skills, and wellbeing.

  • Partner with families to strengthen parenting capacity and build stability at home.

  • Reduce barriers to access by helping families apply for the Child Wellbeing Subsidy or Additional CCS, which can cover the full cost of care for children at risk.

  • Share progress and insights with referring services (within consent and privacy guidelines) to ensure a coordinated approach.

By working together, we can reduce stress on families, increase child safety, and support better long-term outcomes. Our role is to complement the important work of referring services, not replace it, so that families have a strong and connected network of care.
